Il y a peu, lors d'une visite au MBAM, je découvrais (ou redécouvrais) quelques tableaux d'Alfred Pellan. Cela a été un véritable éblouissement! J'ai réalisé à quel point mon art devait à ce très grand artiste. Je crois qu'il est le peintre québécois qui m'a le plus influencé par son extraordinaire virtuosité, son imagination sans bornes et son énergie créatrice phénoménale.
Il y a de nombreuses années ( je n'avais sans doute pas vingt ans), j'ai eu le bonheur de visiter une rétrospective de son oeuvre au Musée des Beaux Arts de Montréal, bonheur qui fût renouvelé en 1973 au Musée d'Art contemporain de Montréal. Cela a été, pour ma toute jeune psyché, un électrochoc esthétique et spirituel. Par la suite, j'ai aussi découvert de ses oeuvres à Beaubourg et dans d'autres institutions muséales. De même, j'ai eu le bonheur de retrouver ses créations dans quelques publications d'importance présentant et honorant son travail titanesque. Ces rencontres ont marqué mon imaginaire au-delà de ma conscience.
Je voudrais rappeler que comme Borduas et Riopelle, il a séjourné à Paris et fréquenté le milieu artistique de là-bas. Le surréalisme et le cubisme l'ont fortement marqué et son oeuvre en témoigne amplement.
Il y a découvert une liberté créatrice qu'il a faite sienne pour notre plus grand bonheur. Bien loin d'être un imitateur, Pellan a intégré ces langages en les mariant à son héritage québécois mâtiné de cultures amérindienne et inuite.
A few weeks ago, when making a visit at the MMFA, I discovered (or rediscovered) three or four paintings by Alfred Pellan. It as an overwhelming impact on me! I realized how my art was a tribute to this incridible artist. I believe that the art of Alfred Pellan as tremendously influence my relation with artistic creation by his extraordinary virtuosity, his unlimited imagination et phenomenal creative energy.
When I was still an adolescent, I had the priviledge of visiting a retrospective of Alfred Pallan's art at the Montreal Museum of Fine Art. It has been an aesthetical ans spiritual electric shock for my practicly virgin psyche.
Later I saw some of his works at Beaubourg and in other museums and galleries. Also, monographies honoring his extraordinary talent renew this satori in time. It has marked my mind much more that I imagined.
As Borduas and Riopelle, Pellan went in Paris and met some of the artistic giant of that period. Surrealism and cubism influence deeply his vision as history showed it. He did find there a creative liberty that he makes his for our profound joy. Far from being an imitator, Pellan had integrate those languages and married them with his québécois roots mixed with native amerindian and inuit cultures.
